Johann Heinrich Klemm was born on 1 September 1860 at the Klemm home near the Gruenberg Church, South Australia. He was the sixth child and third son of Johann Gottlieb Klemm and his wife Johanna Louise Klemm, nee Mattner. Unfortunately his mother died in his third year, shortly after giving birth to a baby brother. His father remarried a few months later. Henry, sometimes called Harry, was baptised in the Gruenberg Lutheran Church. He attended the Lutheran School, situated next door to the Gruenberg Church. His teacher was Mr D Lemke who is also remembered as a builder of pipe organs, including the one in the Gruenberg Church. In January 1872 Henry’s father went north and selected newly available farming land at Appila, South Australia. So, at the age of 12 years, Henry had a new home which was later known as Gum Bank. Here he helped his father grow wheat and keep sheep. Horses were an important part of his life, both for riding and pulling farm machinery, wagons and buggies. On 10 October 1883 Henry married Maria Albinus in the Bethany Lutheran Church, near Tanunda, South Australia. Maria was born at Bethel on 15 January 1859, the daughter of Michael Albinus and his wife Agneta, nee Kaiser. Henry’s sister, Bertha, had married Maria’s brother four years earlier. When Henry married he lived on Section 463 of the Hundred of Appila, a few miles north of the 243 Johann Gottlieb Klemm Heinrich Klemm as young man Heinrich and Maria Klemm family home. Here he and his wife raised a family of thirteen children. Upon the death of his father, in November 1903, Henry inherited the home property, which by then had a second and bigger house on it. His large family was certainly grateful to be able to move into such a spacious residence. Two years later, Johann Heinrich was accidentally shot in one leg at the Appila Rifle Club. Unfortunately the leg had to be amputated and he had a wooden leg for the rest of his life. However, this didn’t prevent him from riding his beloved horses. Henry and his family were active members of the Appila Lutheran Church. He was the treasurer of that congregation for 25 years, and later served as treasurer of the Wirrabara Congregation for some time. The children were 244 Chapter 5 Great Love of the Land Silver Wedding of Heinrich and Maria Klemm with all 13 children 1908 Back: Louis, Elsie, Theodore, Esther, Elizabeth, Arthur, Hermine Centre: Adeline, Hermann Jericho (son-in-law), Maria, Heinrich, Martha, Herbert Front: Frieda, Sophie, Oscar J H Klemm’s first home At 88 years of age Heinrich Klemm sits confidently astride his riding horse at the Gum Bank farm able to attend the Lutheran Day School next to the church, and two of his daughters ended up marrying teachers who had served at the school. Henry was a progressive kind of person and had the honour of owning the first motor car in the district. In 1911 he purchased a Talbot for 550 pounds-$1100 in today’s money. It was just too bad that the whole family couldn’t fit in! As a councillor for eight years Henry ensured that he had good roads on which to drive his vehicle. He also joined the newly established Agricultural Bureau in 1897. Henry’s youngest son, Oscar, was married in October 1928. By this time Henry and his wife had moved into their retirement home in Wirrabara. Five of their single daughters continued to live with them there. From Wirrabara, Henry went over to the farm regularly, staying overnight during busy times such as shearing. In fact, he was still driving the car across to the farm, and riding his horse Prince, shortly before his 90th birthday. Maria died on 11 January 1943 after breaking a hip and developing pneumonia. Single daughters Elizabeth, Elsie and Sophie looked after their father. Soon after celebrating his 90th birthday Henry became seriously ill, and died on 18 October 1950. Both he and his wife were buried in the Wirrabara Cemetery. 1. Louise Emma Martha KLEMM b. 1 Jan 1885 d. 6 Jun 1959 m. Hermann was the third child of Heinrich Jericho and his wife Anna Bertha, nee Gersch. Hermann was the Lutheran School teacher at Appila when he married Martha. However, due to throat problems, he relinquished his teaching duties four years later. Martha faithfully supported her husband in his many and varied pursuits, at a number of locations in South Australia: orchardist in Wirrabara Forest, farmer at Karoonda, dairy farmer at Jervois, and fruit grower at Barmera. In retirement they lived at Tanunda for a short time, and then moved to a fruit property at Renmark. Martha and Hermann raised a family of nine children, and were able to celebrate their Golden Wedding on 20 September 1957. Martha died on 6 June 1959 and Hermann died on 2 March 1959. Lydia Martha JAESCHKE b. 15 Sep 1885 d. 7 May 1964 Heinrich Theodor was the second child and oldest son of Johann Heinrich Klemm and his wife Maria, nee Albinus. He was born at home at Appila, South Australia, on 16 January 1886. Both his baptism and confirmation took place in the Appila Lutheran Church. Ted, as people called him, spent the first 17 years of his life on his father’s farm, several miles from his paternal grandfather’s property. When the grandfather died, the whole family moved to the original Klemm property Gum Bank. So, when Ted married on 15 February 1911, the property on which he grew up became his own, namely, Section 463 of the Hundred of Appila. His wife was Lydia Martha Jaeschke, the daughter of Carl Heinrich Jaeschke and his wife Henriette Auguste, nee Reichstein. Martha was born on 15 September 1885. After a severe drought in 1914 the family moved to a smaller property of 25 acres on the outskirts of Laura, South Australia. Sections 19, 20 and 22 of the Hundred of Booyoolie were on river flat country. Ted was inventive and made thousands of bricks, using clay from the banks of the Rocky River, plus a certain amount of sand. He made a horse-powered mixing bowl, and a kiln to burn the bricks. When brother Louis was building his home, Ted supplied the bricks. This whole venture came to an end when Ted died suddenly from a stroke on 24 June 1942. He was on a visit to Whyalla at the time. Following her husband’s death, Martha and her daughter moved to Adelaide where she died on 7 May 1964. She and Ted were buried in the Laura Cemetery. 251 Johann Gottlieb Klemm Martha and Theodor Klemm FAMILY OF HEINRICH THEODOR & LYDIA MARTHA KLEMM 1. She was the third child of Johann Heinrich Klemm and his wife Maria, nee Albinus. She was baptised and confirmed in the Appila Lutheran Church. When in her teens, Lizzie moved into the Gum Bank home with the rest of the family. As a hobby she painted pictures, some of which still adorned the walls of the Gum Bank residence in the 1950s. Being unmarried, she went with her parents when they retired to Wirrabara, South Australia, in 1928. Upon the death of her aged father, Lizzie and her sister Elsie inherited the Wirrabara home. Eventually this house was sold, and Lizzie bought a home in Clare where she lived for some time. Her last years were spent in the Willochra Home for the Aged at Crystal Brook, South Australia. She died on 26 August 1966 and was buried in the Crystal Brook Cemetery. 252 Chapter 5 Great Love of the Land Marion, Victor, Ethel and Anthony Klemm 1993 Victor and sister Chloris Klemm 1993 Alma Elizabeth Klemm 4. She was born at home at Appila, South Australia, on 6 June 1888. Elsie was both baptised and confirmed in the Appila Lutheran Church. She moved into the more spacious Gum Bank home with the rest of the family after the death of her grandfather. As a young woman Elsie became engaged to Samuel Jericho, a missionary in New Guinea. Unfortunately he drowned there, and she never married. When her parents retired to Wirrabara, South Australia, she moved with them. Along with her sister Lizzie, she inherited this home upon the death of her father. From Wirrabara she went to Nuriootpa, South Australia, to live with sister Minnie Krieg. Her last years were spent in the Barossa Nursing Home. In March 1983 most unusual weather conditions resulted in a flash flood hitting Nuriootpa and the Barossa Nursing Home. Elsie, along with some other residents, had to be rescued with a front-end loader. Until her room was again habitable she spent some time in the Tanunda Lutheran Home. Elsie lived to celebrate her 95th birthday and died on 26 April 1984. She was buried in the Wirrabara Cemetery. 5. Frederick Arthur KLEMM b. 14 Sep 1889 d. 11 Feb 1972 m. He was born at home at Appila, South Australia, on 14 September 1889, and baptised and confirmed in the Appila Lutheran Church. Pastor Ortenburger was his pastor for most of his life while he was at home. On 17 April 1918 Arthur married Sophie Ernestine Mathilda Becker. Sophie was the daughter of Gustav Adolf Alfred Becker and his wife Christina Mathilda, nee Schaefer. Sophie was born on 30 April 1892 at Caltowie, South Australia. The young couple began farming in the Brinkworth district, and in 1924 built a new home named Artinald. This was a combination of the father’s and son’s names. They lived there until Reginald married in 1946, and then retired to the Becker home in Tanunda, where they cared for Sophie’s father before he died. In 1949 Arthur and Sophie moved to their own retirement home in Clare, South Australia. Sophie’s health gradually deteriorated and towards the end of her life she became blind. Arthur’s sister, Sophie, came to assist him in caring 253 Johann Gottlieb Klemm Elsie Klemm Sophie and Arthur Klemm for his invalid wife, who died on 16 April 1953. His sister stayed on as housekeeper for the rest of Arthur’s life. While living at Clare, Arthur would still visit the farm at Brinkworth. As well, a new Lutheran Church was being built at Clare, and he helped where he could. Gardening was one of Arthur’s interests and he got a lot of pleasure out of giving vegetables to other people. He died on 11 February 1972 and was buried beside his wife in the Brinkworth Cemetery, which happens to be surrounded by the Klemm property. Farmer & Grazier res. Gladstone, SA m. Emma Louise REICHSTEIN b. 2 Feb 1891 d. 25 Jun 1975 Herbert Edgar Klemm was born on 20 October 1891 at home at Appila, South Australia. He was the seventh child and third son of Johann Heinrich Klemm and his wife Maria, nee Albinus. Pastor Ortenburger officiated at his baptism on 22 November 1891, and at his confirmation on 9 December 1906, in the Appila Lutheran Church. Having moved into the Gum Bank home with the rest of the family, he was able to attend the Pine Creek Lutheran School for some time. Mr Hermann Jericho was his teacher. On 28 August 1924 Herb married Emma Louise Reichstein at St John Church of England in Laura, South Australia. The officiating minister was Rev William Burville. Louise was the daughter of Adolph Edward Reichstein and his wife Marie Elisabeth, nee Breuer. She was born on 2 February 1891 at Appila. The couple made their home on a property which comprised Sections 46, 47, 115, 117, of the Hundred of Booyoolie. Sheep were Herb’s main interest. His inventive mind helped him to make or adapt equipment, to make work easier on the farm and in the woolshed. During his life he carted wheat in four different ways: bullock dray, horse and wagon, bags on a truck, and bulk bins to a silo. In 1956 Herb, together with his wife and family, moved to a home in Gladstone, from where he made daily trips to the farm. All his life Herb remained an active member of the Lutheran Church. Although he and Louise were not greatly involved in community organizations, many Church and community projects benefitted from their generosity. Herb died on 2 December 1967 and Louise died on 25 June 1975. They were buried in the Gladstone Cemetery. FAMILY OF HERBERT EDGAR & EMMA LOUISE KLEMM 1. Joyce Elizabeth KLEMM b. 1 May 1926 occ. She was baptised and confirmed by Pastor Ortenburger in the Appila Lutheran Church. In 1903 the family moved into the Gum Bank home and from there she attended the Pine Creek Lutheran School for some years. Mr Hermann Jericho was her teacher. On 28 September 1935 Minnie married Emil Julius Krieg in the Wirrabara Lutheran Church, South Australia. Julius was the son of Carl Krieg and his wife Karolina, nee Kranz, and lived at Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley. He had a vineyard, but also bought and sold pigs, acting as an agent for Jacob’s Bacon Factory at Mount Barker, South Australia. Julius owned and raced some coursing greyhounds as well. There were no children. Julius died on 8 July 1971 and Minnie died on 15 June 1978. They were buried in the Nuriootpa Cemetery. 264 Chapter 5 Great Love of the Land Julius and Minnie Krieg 1935 One of Julius Krieg’s prize-winning dogs 1912 9. Louis Bernhard KLEMM b. 4 Dec 1894 d. 5 May 1979 m. Clara Else WEGNER b. 11 May 1902 Louis Bernhard Klemm was the ninth child of Johann Heinrich Klemm and his wife Maria, nee Albinus. He was born at home at Appila, South Australia, on 4 December 1894. Pastor Ortenburger baptised and confirmed him. When the family moved to the original Klemm property known as Gum Bank, Louis was able to attend the Pine Creek Lutheran School, and Mr Hermann Jericho taught him. After leaving school Louis worked with his father on the farm. For a time he also worked for the Laura butcher, and learnt how to kill and dress sheep and other animals. This knowledge came in handy later, when he had his own farm and butchered sheep and pigs for home use. As a young man Louis was the proud owner of a Henderson motorcycle, and was the envy of other young men in the district. He didn’t need it to go courting, though, because his beloved lived on the other side of the creek running through the Klemm property. Else did, however, dare to let Louis take her for a ride on the bike when he wanted to show her the house he was building for them. On 18 September 1924 Louis and Clara Else Wegner were married in the Appila Lutheran Church by Pastor Ortenburger. On the marriage certificate the church is actually called the “Evangelical Lutheran Chapel at Appila (Pine Creek)”. They were privileged to enjoy a union of more than 50 years. Else was the daughter of Johann Wilhelm Friedrich Wegner and Johanne Caroline Bertha, nee Pech. She was born on 11 May 1902. Louis and Else settled on Sections 25 and 77 of the Hundred of Appila, where they grew wheat and kept sheep. Their three sons were raised on this property. In 1920 Louis had a claim to fame, for he became the first person from Appila to have a ride in an aeroplane. For a fifteen minute joyride he paid the sum of two guineas, or two pounds two shillings ($4.40). Before boarding the plane he had to put on a white dustcoat and goggles, because the plane had an open cockpit. Just before the marriage of their youngest son, Melvin, Louis and Else built a retirement home in Wirrabara, South Australia. Their unmarried son, Gordon, lived with them there, and all three now became members of the Lutheran Church in Wirrabara. Louis died on 5 May 1979 and was buried in the Wirrabara Cemetery. Else continued living in the Wirrabara home and spent many hours in her wonderful flower garden. Just before her 90th birthday she became a resident of the Mt View Homes in Booleroo Centre, South Australia, and still lives there. 265 Johann Gottlieb Klemm Louis and Else Klemm 1924 Louis Klemm family.
